Rogerstown Estuary

Size: 24 hectares

 Rogerstown estuary is a well known for birdwatching ,in past years it has flooded at high tide along the Spout road and along the grasslands.

 BirdWatch Ireland owns 39 of the 59 acres in the reserve.

Habitats include grassland and saltmarsh.

 

Brent Geese arrive in important numbers each year and feed along the grass, oblivious to the cars and people on the move.

Other species of wintering waterfowl ,including Wigeon and Black-tailed Godwit are regulars in Rogerstown.

 Greylag Geese have been seen on the estuary.Grey Herons can be seen in the trees around the estuary early in the morning,catching the warmth of the morning sun. When the tide is out waders can be spotted, including Green Sandpiper and Wood Sandpiper and ruff. Peregrine, Hen Harrier have been sighted in the area.A pair Little Egrets have been wintering over the last two mild winters.A Purple Heron has also been seen.
